How To Choose Your Perfect Shade Of Concealer

Concealer is an important part of makeup that helps you achieve a flawless finish.

Concealer can be used for more than brightening and concealing, if you’ve got the right one.

What you should consider most when choosing a concealer is the purpose you want it to achieve and your unique coloring. However, take note that it’s not advisable to use concealer to even out skin tone – that’s the work of your foundation. Concealer is great for blemishes and dark circles.

No matter your intent for getting concealer – from dark under-eye circles to red spots – you will learn the perfect shade for you as you read on.

How to get a concealer shade for your skin tone?

The rule of thumb for picking your concealer shade is based off of your foundation shade.

According to beauty experts, everyone should have two shades of concealer: one lighter, one darker, since daily sun exposure means your skin tone shifts slightly all the time. Plus, makeup artists use multiple shades of concealer for different end effects.

Your under-eye concealer shouldn’t necessarily match your skin color

It is not compulsory for your under-eye concealer to match your skin color if you really want a brightening effect. Although your foundation has to be appropriate, there’s a lot more you can do with your concealer.

For red spots, your aim is to get them to blend into the rest of your skin. Therefore, it is only sensible to make use of a concealer that is exactly the same shade as your skin.

For dark under-eye circles, the objective is slightly different. What you want to achieve is a lighter look. So, go for a lighter shade to lighten the area.

For under-eye concealer

Select a shade that’s around 1-2 shades lighter than your skin. If you have to choose between two products, say one that’s one shade lighter and one that’s three shades lighter, go for the concealer that’s closer to your natural skin tone.

Take this tip

An easy way to find a good match is to test cover-up on the veins on your wrist. If the product hides your veins and looks natural, then it’ll look perfect under your eyes.

For contouring

For contouring, choose a concealer shade that’s 1-2 shades lighter or darker than your foundation shade match.

How to match your spot concealer to your skin

If your goal is to cover pimples and red spots, then opt for a product that’s exactly the same colour as your own skin. Although it’s nice to colour-test your concealer before you buy, there are some general rules of thumb to follow.

Essentially, if you have a light-to-medium skin tone, you’ll want to go for a yellow-based concealer. If you have medium-to-dark skin, go for a red or orange undertone.

Applying your concealer

Regarding applying concealer, applying concealer, some makeup artists suggest that using a clean finger to lightly dab works well. This is because the warmth from your skin helps to soften the concealer making it smoother to apply.

It works well in moisturizing the skin

For a well-nourished skin, bananas are very reliable and effective. Banana is rich in potassium, moisture and vitamin A and it works in hydrating and moisturizing dry skin. Vitamin A in banana also helps to smoothen out the rough texture of the skin and heals dry, parched skin.

Wait for 10 to 15 minutes. After this, rinse with cold water and enjoy the soft feel of your skin.

How To Apply Perfume Oils The Right Way

Perfume oils are different from the commercially available perfumes that have a high alcohol content, which sometimes is even up to 95%.

Now the pure perfume oil in the alcohol mixture is only a small amount of 5 – 20%.

There are concentrated perfume oils that do not contain alcohol. They are, in fact, much stronger than eau de parfums or eau de toilettes and therefore should only be used sparingly.

For a beautiful fragrance result, just a few drops of the concentrated oil on specific areas should be enough.

Traditional application of perfume oils

The traditional way to use perfume oils is to apply the fragrance indirectly to the garment/clothing. The perfume oils can be applied with the roller head of the perfume bottle or with the applicator stick. To do this, take one or more drops of the perfume oil into the palm of the hand or the inner wrist and gently rub the palms together. Then the perfume oil is applied to the clothes by gently stroking the palms of the hands over the clothes.

This helps to ensure that your clothes are not soiled and it also allows the perfume oil to be spread over a large part of the clothes.

But when doing this, you should consider the sensitivity of the clothing as well as the color of the garment. For light-coloured clothing or sensitive fabrics such as silk, you should test it in a non-visible place beforehand. This is particularly recommended for darker oils.

Applying directly on the skin or hair

Apply a small drop of the perfume to your inner wrists, along your jawline, behind your earlobes, and the ends of your hair.

You should be careful when doing this. When applying on your wrists, avoid rubbing your wrists together after you have applied the perfume oil on your wrists. What it does is ruin the fragrance.

You can also apply the perfume oil on the back of your knee. Simply rub the perfume oil right behind your kneecap. The friction caused when you bend your legs or walk will heat up this part of your leg and you’ll be able to achieve a stronger fragrance.

When applying perfume oil behind your earlobes, you need to be careful of not applying too much. This is because your ears are close to your face and nose and you’ll be more sensitive to the smell if you add too much.

Remember that the sillage usually does not start immediately and can be overwhelming. So, you should be careful and don’t be tempted to use more oil quickly – you’ll need to wait for a while and see.

This is because perfume oils usually gain strength when warmed by your skin and movements. You can always “top up” the perfume a little, but it’s harder to weaken the fragrance afterwards if you have used too much.

As with all products, care should be taken when using perfume oils. In case of skin rash or itching, discontinue immediately and wash thoroughly with soap and water. See your doctor if necessary. Keep fragrances away from children.
